You’re Not Starting Over — You’re Starting From Experience
There have been several times in my life when I’ve thought:
Well… now what?
Life has a funny way of changing the plan when we least expect it.
Sometimes we choose the change.
Sometimes change chooses us.
A career shifts.
Our family changes.
Our bodies change.
We experience loss.
Our priorities become different.
Or one day we simply realize that the life we were living doesn’t quite fit anymore.
And suddenly, we find ourselves standing at the beginning of something new.
It can feel a lot like starting over.
But lately, I’ve realized something.
I’m not starting over.
And neither are you.
You’re Starting With Everything You’ve Already Lived
Think about the person you were 10, 20 or 30 years ago.
Would you really want to erase everything you’ve learned since then?
I wouldn’t.
Because every chapter of my life has given me something.
Some chapters gave me confidence.
Some gave me incredible memories.
Some taught me resilience.
Some taught me what I value.
Some taught me what I will never tolerate again.
And some chapters I never would have chosen for myself.
But even those changed me.
That’s the thing about experience.
We don’t leave it behind when we begin again.
We bring it with us.
Strength Doesn’t Always Look Like Strength
For years, I worked in fitness.
Strength was something you could see.
How much could you lift?
How hard could you train?
How far could you push yourself?
I still love being physically strong.
But life has taught me that some of our greatest strength has absolutely nothing to do with muscles.
Sometimes strength is getting up when you’d rather stay in bed.
Sometimes it’s asking for help.
Sometimes it’s accepting that something has changed.
Sometimes it’s saying no.
Sometimes it’s walking away.
Sometimes it’s allowing yourself to grieve.
And sometimes strength is finally giving yourself permission to be happy again.
Those things don’t come with a medal.
But they change us.
Life Doesn’t Always Give Us a Choice
I’ve had chapters in my own life that changed me profoundly.
Some were exciting.
Some were terrifying.
Some broke my heart.
I’ve learned that we don’t always get to choose what happens to us.
But eventually, we do get to choose what we do with what happened.
That doesn’t mean pretending difficult things didn’t hurt.
It doesn’t mean putting a positive spin on everything.
And it certainly doesn’t mean going back to who we were before.
Sometimes there is no going back.
There’s only forward.
And I’ve come to believe there can be something incredibly powerful about that.
Stop Trying to Become the Old You
How often do we say:
“I want to get back to my old self.”
“I want my old body back.”
“I want my old life back.”
“I want things to be how they used to be.”
I’ve said versions of those things too.
But I’m starting to question whether that’s what I actually want.
Because the woman I am today knows things the younger version of me didn’t.
She’s lived.
She’s loved.
She’s lost.
She’s succeeded.
She’s made mistakes.
She’s laughed until she cried.
She’s had moments that scared the hell out of her.
And she’s discovered that she’s capable of getting through things she once couldn’t imagine.
Why would I want to erase her?
I don’t want to become the old me.
I want to see what this version of me can do.
Experience Is Your Advantage
There is a freedom that comes when we stop looking at our next chapter as starting from zero.
We’re not.
We’re starting with knowledge.
We’re starting with perspective.
We’re starting with better instincts.
We’re starting with stories.
We’re starting with scars.
We’re starting with boundaries.
We’re starting with confidence we had to earn.
We’re starting with a much clearer understanding of what matters — and what doesn’t.
That’s not baggage.
That’s experience.
And experience is an advantage.
Maybe You’re In Your Own In-Between Right Now
Maybe something in your life is changing.
Maybe you’re rebuilding.
Maybe you’re reinventing yourself.
Maybe you’re wondering what comes next.
Or maybe nothing dramatic has happened at all — you just know you’re ready for something different.
You don’t need to have the entire next chapter figured out.
I certainly don’t.
Start with one decision.
One conversation.
One new habit.
One idea.
One brave little yes.
And see where it takes you.
Because the beginning of something new doesn’t require you to forget everything that came before it.
It asks you to use it.
I’m Starting From Experience
That’s how I’m looking at this chapter of my own life.
I’m bringing all of it with me.
More than 30 years in fitness and wellness.
The businesses.
The successes.
The mistakes.
The people I’ve met.
The things I’ve learned about health, strength and resilience.
The beautiful moments.
The heartbreaking ones.
The laughter.
The loss.
The lessons I never asked for but carry anyway.
It’s all part of me.
And instead of wishing I could go backwards, I’m becoming much more interested in what might be ahead.
There are still things I want to build.
Things I want to learn.
Places I want to go.
People I want to help.
Conversations I want to have.
And a whole lot of life I still want to experience.
So no…
I’m not starting over.
I’m starting from experience.
And if you’re standing at the beginning of something new too, I hope you’ll remember:
Everything you’ve survived.
Everything you’ve learned.
Everything you’ve built.
Everything you’ve loved.
Everything that’s changed you.
You get to bring it all with you.
Your next chapter doesn’t begin at zero.
It begins with you.
Let’s Light It Up.
